3 Awards for Armory College Prep Middle School at FIRST LEGO League Competition

On Saturday, January 11, 2020, ACP Middle School traveled to The Avenues School (Chelsea, NYC) to participate in the FIRST LEGO League Qualifier. This year’s FIRST theme is City Shapers, which focuses on solving real-world problems in the community. Teams of 10 students or less were tasked with identifying a problem in their neighborhood and an engineering solution. At the competition, teams presented their research as well as their execution of FIRST core values to three panels of judges. On the robotics side, students were scored on their robot’s design, coding, and ability to complete designated missions.

The Flood Rangers won the Innovation Award for their solution that involved utilizing greywater in low-income apartment buildings. Their overall score (which combined presentation and robotics performances) enabled them to advance to the semifinals later next month.

The Visionaries won the Teamwork Award for exceptional collaboration in their presentation and robot design. Teams were also tasked with and assessed by completing an “on-the-spot” assignment in the judging room. Ultimately, the judges deemed The Visionaries a standout among 20 teams.

The Flood Rangers advanced to the next round and took home the Innovation Award.
