Summer Programming Concludes for Armory College Prep

Armory College Prep’s six weeks of summer enrichment for its respective middle and high school students concluded this month. Sessions took place Mondays through Thursdays at The Armory.

Our ACP High School Program devoted time to researching and visiting colleges, preparing for college admissions, sharpening academic skills, exploring career areas (even making a stop downtown for an inside look at architectural firm WORKac), reading and analyzing literature, and practicing yoga. The curriculum also emphasized fine arts; students developed their acting skills in preparation for the culminating program event, ACP’s annual Summer Showcase. This summer’s performance was based on the ancient Greek play, The Bacchae.

Students in the ACP Middle School Program partook in friendly competition through kickball games in nearby J. Hood Wright Park and trivia in our theater; honed in on their creativity while tie-dying shirts (they each made four to rotate throughout the summer); made paper from recycled materials; went to The New York Public Library as well as four bookstores throughout the city; trekked downtown to the Color Factory; rode bikes in Inwood Hill Park (twice each week) with Bike New York instructors; visited AllianceBernstein; ate at local restaurants; and more!

Both the middle and high school programs enjoyed KPMG Community Impact Day.

A new and exciting component of summer programming for our middle school children included learning how to fence! They were led by Adam Rodney, a top-ranked New York fencing competitor and Olympic qualifier, and Dwight Smith, a fencing coach who was just named Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Fencing Coaches Association. During the 10 sessions in our arena, our 28 middle school students practiced drills, competed with each other, and learned the fundamentals of the sport. Three of our students even earned the opportunity to further develop their skills with a set of complimentary sessions at the Fencers Club.

ACP High School sessions will resume in September, with Middle School resuming in October. To relive summer fun and to stay up-to-date with Armory College Prep, be sure to follow @thearmoryfndn on Instagram and Twitter.

The Armory Foundation thanks our many supporters that made this summer a special one for the children in our community.
