Armory College Prep Takes on Robotics Semifinals

On Saturday, February 29, twenty-six students from Armory College Prep competed at the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Semifinals at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn. Three ACP teams earned a spot at the competition by advancing from FIRST’s quarterfinal rounds earlier in the year. Two teams were comprised of Great Minds 5th graders, and one team’s students are currently in the ACP Middle School program.

The team of middle schoolers, named the Flood Rangers for its innovation greywater solution to flooding, was recognized at the competition’s end for exhibiting Gracious Professionalism. FIRST defines Gracious Professionalism “as a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.”

All teams presented the following to panels of judges: an engineering solution to a chosen community problem, their robot design and coding process, and how the team displayed FIRST core values while preparing for the competition. Following presentations, teams’ robots had to perform specific missions, or movements, under time constraints using the coding learned in the preparation process.
