Tendonitis

Dr. Elan Goldwaser discusses how to treat and prevent tendonitis.

Tendons are the touch, flexible tissues that connects muscles to bones. Tendonitis occurs when the tendons are overused, causing inflammation and even small tears. The best way to treat tendonitis is rest, ice (to decrease inflammation), modifying exercise (to prevent over exertion), and stretching. To help prevent damage to their tendons, runners should stretch before every workout, with 30 seconds of hold in each position, to ensure the tendon is pulled softly. This will allow runners to slowly adapt to changes that occur while running.

Elite Care, for Elite Runners

Every year, injuries force thousands of runners and endurance athletes off of the track, trail, or course. Yet many of these injuries can be prevented by learning how and why they happen, and what athletes can do during training to keep themselves healthy.

The Runners Health series, produced by the Armory Track in collaboration with the sports medicine experts at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, is designed to educate runners on staying healthy while training, preventing injuries from happening, and treatment options for when they do occur.
