AN ADULT WELLNESS INITIATIVE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER SENIORS FROM WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, INWOOD, THE SOUTH BRONX AND HARLEM.
What is the Seniors AIM High Program at The Armory?
The Seniors AIM High initiative, in partnership with Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM) from Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, offers vibrant weekly, wellness sessions for adults (60+ years) living and working Uptown to move more as a community. More than 600 senior citizens have signed up to take part in this no-cost program offering opportunities to walk and run in a safe space, make new friends, and learn tips to living a longer, healthier life. With close to 200 participants gathering each week, The Armory welcomes local seniors to sessions taking place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 10:00am at "The World's Fastest Track".
What happens at each session?
Starting at 10:00am, coaches from The Armory lead 60-minute fitness sessions including group exercises and a walk around the track. The fitness session is followed by conversations with Columbia physicians, like Rafael Lantigua, MD, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Community Service at Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Nancy Chang, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at VP&S. Conversations focus on issues related to healthy aging, including how to exercise as you age, diabetes, vaccines, falls, hypertension, and how to make the most of a doctor’s visit. Presenters devote time for questions, and participants are eager to engage. Participants occasionally receive incentives, such as program t-shirts, fitness tracker watches, and athletic shoes, as they progress in the program.
Why does the Seniors AIM High Program matter?
This is more than just a weekly exercise class. It's a lifeline to a healthier lifestyle.
